Brief
History
SASPA
was founded and launched at a national meeting held at Crown Plaza
Hotel, NEC Birmingham on 6th July 2003, by Drs
Ishtiaq Ahmad & Domingo
Gonzalez.
So far there has not been a coherent and consistent voice, which
represents psychiatrists in this grade. Many doctors in this
grade have been hitherto quite demoralized because of the lack
of an
effective communication channel which the employing and other
authorities could
take notice of to improve the working conditions of this group
of psychiatrists. Because of this, there has been a culture of
abuse
from managers as well as some senior consultant colleagues in
terms of work practices. Occasionally, the pivotal role of
this group
has been acknowledged in a patronizing way, nevertheless, these
senior
clinicians have been neglected even in terms of professional
development. The aim of the association is not to replicate
what the BMA stands
for but to compliment its role in opening up an appropriate pathway
of communication with the employing authorities particularly
in the field of Psychiatry.
Given the importance of this group of doctors in efficiently
running day-to-day clinical services, it is hoped that SASPA
as a representative
organization will effectively gain respect of the employing as
well as other regulatory authorities.
